GUIDELINE TO PLANNING and designing A PEDIATRIC OFFICE

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION

Efficient system for managing patient records. Interactive tablets, televisions playing child-friendly shows, or digital wall games in the waiting area. Intercom systems for efficient communication among staff.

HYGIENE AND INFECTION CONTROL

Easily accessible hand sanitizer dispensers throughout the office. Non-porous surfaces that can be easily disinfected. Regular cleaning schedules. HEPA filters and good ventilation to maintain air quality.

PARENT AMENITIES

Comfortable seating with phone charging stations in the waiting area. Private areas for breastfeeding or calming distressed children. Digital displays or bulletin boards with health information, educational content, and office announcements.

LAYOUT AND FLOW

Bright, cheerful colors with child-friendly decor, such as murals or themed rooms. Consider a play area with safe, non-toxic toys. Separate spaces for sick and well children can help minimize the spread of illnesses. Ensure all medical equipment is safely stored out of children's reach. Examination tables should be easily accessible and safe for children.

FURNITURE AND EQUIPMENT

Tables, chairs, and other furniture designed for children’s sizes. Use materials that are easy to clean and sanitize. Vinyl upholstery and solid surface countertops are good choices. Pediatric-sized medical equipment and instruments. Ensure all equipment is easily cleanable

INTERIOR DESIGN

Bright, cheerful colors with calming tones. Avoid overwhelming patterns. Use themes such as nature, space, or underwater worlds to make the environment fun and engaging. Wall decals, murals, and interactive displays can enhance the decor. Soft, natural lighting is ideal. Ensure adequate lighting in examination rooms without harsh glares.

SAFETY AND ACCESSIBILITY

Rounded corners on furniture, non-slip flooring, and securely mounted fixtures. Electrical outlets should be childproofed. ADA-compliant design to ensure accessibility for children and parents with disabilities, including ramps, wide doorways, and accessible restrooms.
